Beginning in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the subject of melancholy became a preoccupation of writers, artists and composers in Europe. In this programme we feature a selection of some of the most poignant musical examples on this theme.

About the event

Beginning in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the subject of melancholy became a preoccupation of writers, artists and composers in Europe. In this programme we feature a selection of some of the most poignant musical examples on this theme including works by John Dowland, Henry Purcell, Georg Frederic Handel and Antonio Vivaldi.


Ensemble Antiqua consists of Llewellyn Negrin (recorder), Christine Akerman (baroque violin and viola), Tim Lowe (guitar and lute) and Alexander Rodrigues (spinet and voice).
