Refugee Chaplaincy Program

Fr Shammi Perera - Chaplain for Migrants, Refugees and Asylum Seekers  Archdiocese of Hobart

The Archdiocesan Chaplaincy for Migrants, Refugees and Asylum Seekers was established in 2013 to cater for the spiritual, pastoral and material needs of migrants of various categories.  The inspiration for our commitment towards humanitarian entrants, refugees and asylum seekers derives from the Sacred Scriptures.  We are aware the God of Israel is a God who protects and safeguards the rights of the vulnerable stranger and admonishes His people to do the same.  “You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt (Ex 22:21)”.

Christ himself identified with the vulnerable asylum seekers when the members of the Holy Family fled the wrath of bloodthirsty Herod to Egypt.  In the chaplaincy we provide a wide variety of spiritual and pastoral care for the migrants and humanitarian entrants who arrive on our doorstep.  With the support of committed volunteers we offer them hospitality and facilitate their initial and ongoing integration into the Australian community.  If you wish to be part of our volunteer team to contribute positively in the pastoral care of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers we would be sincerely grateful.

Those new arrivals into our State who require spiritual, pastoral or material assistance may provide their information through this link.   cathedral@aohtas.org.au
